Go, Georgia!
AGM 2017 has brought a change in our committee. After 5 years at the helm, Michael Kinneavy has decided it is time to pass the baton. Michael's leadership over the years has helped develop what Knox City Cougars is today. His commitment, enthusiasm, and strong sense of community are three characteristics that shone through. He has done an outstanding job shaping this organisation, and we thank him for his extraordinary work and leadership skills. But Michael isn't leaving the Knox City Cougars community just yet! He will be staying on as an active member of the committee. There has also been a number of shuffles with our coordinators. We say thank you and good-bye (for now) to Paul Clark, Trevor Haskett, Candice Marks and Cindy Shadwell. We really appreciate all your hard work and commitment in organising and dealing with all the teams (not an easy job!). It is also sad to lose Nadine Coughlin, our Sponsorship and Events Manager, due to work commitments. She has done a tremendous job in securing vital club sponsors, as well as organising club events. Thank you, Nadine!
But, it's not all sad goodbyes... we welcome our new President, Jodie Fuller. She is coming on board with energy, passion and fresh ideas to develop a stronger club. Thank you also to David Lacchiana for volunteering to be a new coordinator.
While there are many returning members this year, we especially appreciate the interest of new members and hope you will enjoy your work on the committee. The committee continues to evolve and with your creativity and commitment, we can use our collective abilities to keep Knox City Basketball Club strong and consistently focused on fun, fitness and friendship.

ALICIA LAWSON 26/07/1980 – 12/05/2017
The Knox Basketball community is deeply saddened by the passing of Alicia Lawson and offer its condolences to her family and friends. Alicia passed away at home on May 12, 2017 after a two-year battle with cancer.
Alicia has been a fantastic contributor to basketball in Knox and surrounding associations following an involvement spanning over thirty years.
Having played basketball at Knox with both the Ferntree Gully Falcons and Scoresby Scorpions from a young age, Alicia’s passion for the game only continued to grow. After being coached by some of the best in the business including Dennis Smith, Gayle Williams and her father Andrew Lawson, Alicia later moved into coaching juniors for both the Ferntree Gully Falcons and the Knox City Cougars.
In 1996, Alicia decided to take the step into officiating and joined the VBRA Knox Branch as an active referee where she later obtained her Level 1A. Alicia was a permanent fixture for many years on the Saturday and Sunday rosters, until she retired in 2014. Alicia was particularly fond of refereeing both the Under 8’s and Under 10’s competition, where she could help teach both players and fellow referees about her love for the game. Her favourite round of the season was without a doubt, the Under 8’s Encouragement Day.
Alicia later took up being a Statistician in the late 90’s, a role which she will most commonly be remembered for. This led her to be involved in basketball at the elite level (both the WNBL and NBL) through her association with the Bulleen Boomers, Melbourne Boomers, Dandenong Ranges, Bendigo Spirit and the South Dragons. The highlight of Alicia’s time as a technical official was in 2006 where she was appointed to the Commonwealth Games in Melbourne
Alicia will forever be remembered for her contagious smile and willingness to help out at the drop of a hat. As a sign of respect to both Alicia and her family, all members of the VBRA Knox Branch wore black arm bands in her memory on 06May, including the Under 8s Encouragement Day.
Rest in peace, Alicia...

A Great Family Fun Day!
A short letter from our Club President:
Just a thank you to all those who helped out at family day for was once again a huge success. I firmly believe we are still the key club that gives back to the members & you could see all the kids were having such a fantastic time. Maddie, great choice on rides - they were all a hit! Maddie & Rach, you did a lot of work & well done to you both.
It’s been a real challenging couple of weeks, with new team entries for the season & the family day to organise, so thanks again for all the support through this time.
I would also like to thank those who helped out that are not on our committee; thanks to David Ross, John & Lenna for all their help on the BBQ, Jade for her help on Merch & Registration, John Winder & for the great music he provided this year. Nicko & Matt for their help on the morning set up & to the few kids that helped out also.
Over the next few weeks we will organise a committee meeting where we will also hold the AGM beforehand to finalise the formalities for the year.
Thanks again to all,
Michael

Congratulations to Our Seasoned Players 2016
Congratulations to our 10-season and 20-season members for 2016! We would love for you to join us at our AGM to collect your trophy, which is going to be held during our Family Fun Day on Sunday, 06 November.
Winter 2016 Finals
Winter 2016 has been a fantastic season. We finally made it across the line as the Number One Club at the biggest basketball association in the Southern Hemisphere! This is something that each and every one of us should be very proud of. We have a fantastic club, and that is a credit to all - our members and the committee - for all the commitment and dedication to the sport. We had 40 teams make finals, and 20 teams in grand finals. Our grass roots Cougar Cubs and U8s program is going strong - and our boys program is now bigger than our girls program! Thank you and well done to all!
Congratulations to Knox Raiders U14 Boys and Girls 2016 Teams!
Congratulations to Knox Raiders U14-1 players for a fantastic effort at the recent Australian U14 Club Championships 2016 which were held in Newcastle & Maitland. The boys played their hearts out and finished as the 4th best team in the country! And the girls have taken the title of Australian U14 Club Champions! Special kudos to Knox City Cougars very own, Ryan Fairchild and Teisha Shadwell - we are so proud of you and your teams!
Smells Like Community Spirit
In late September, our club was lucky enough to participate in a basketball clinic with some visiting students from Wongutha CAPS (http://wonguthacaps.wa.edu.au). And what a fantastic night it was! A massive shout out to Karen and Andrew for organising this night, as well as Michael for the organising our club-side of things. Knox Basketball for organising courts, C Brandon Polk for running the clinic, and all our coaches, committee members, players, and the team from Wongutha CAPS for making it so great.
Trivia Night Fun & Frivolity
Earlier this year, we were lucky enough to join forces with Taylormade Memorabilia; and as part of that sponsorship, we have been able to put together a weekly MVP award which will run for the 2016 Winter Season. Each week, we will contact a different division and ask the coaches to nominate a player who they feel is deserving of the award. The recipient of the award entitles them to a framed collage (of their choice) to the value of $100.
Congratulations to our MVPs:
Tillie Baldwin (GU-8s)
Max Haskett (BU-8s)
Ashleigh Peake (GU-10s)
Jesse Nealy (BU-10s)
Morgan Pay (GU-12s)
Aaron Aulsebrooke-Walker (BU-12s)
Jordyn Yeoman (GU-14s)
Thank you to Taylormade Memorabilia for sponsoring this program.

Knox City Cougars represented again in the Australian Junior Club Championships!
Well done to Knox Raiders GU14-1 and BU14-1 teams for qualifying for the U14 Club Championships! Knox City Cougars is very proud to be represented by Ryan Fairchild and Teisha Shadwell. Best of luck to both of you and your teams!
Congratulations to all our teams who made it to the finals for Summer Season 2015-2016! Just to get to this stage meant a lot of hard work. Thank to you to everyone for their efforts - the committee, the coaches, the girls and boys who proudly represent Knox City Cougars, the scoring volunteers, the families - mums, dads, grandparents, who take the kids to their training sessions and their games every week. Give yourselves a pat on the back for a job well done.

Our very own Sam Donald is off to the USA - to study at New Mexico State University as she pursues her basketball career within the NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association). She's one of a select few who secured college basketball scholarships. We are very proud of Sam and we wish her all the best! This is the article from Knox Leader.
